Full Description
  • Sligachan Bridge

The waters of this location surrounds Scotland’s greatest ever warrior who lived here on Skye. A legendary female fighter by the name of Scáthach. She was an expert in all forms of warfare and the greatest warriors came to train with her at The Fort of Shadows now known as Dunscaith Castle. Her fame spread across the water to Ireland where Cú Chulainn wasn’t happy that somebody could be considered a match for him in combat. The Irish demi-god sailed to Dunscaith and challenged Scáthach to prove once and for all who was strongest.

  • The Old Man of Storr

The area in front of the cliffs of the Storr is known as the Sanctuary. This has several weirdly shaped rock pinnacles, the remnants of ancient landslips. The legend of the locals is that the Old Man of Storr was a giant who lived onthese lands who when was laid to restcould see part of his thumb sticking out of the ground.

  • Portree

In the 1700s, the town was a popular point of departure for Scots sailing to America to escape poverty. This form of use repeated during the famine in the 1840s. Both times, the town was saved by an influx of boats, often going between mainland Scotland and the Outer Hebrides, who used Portree’s pier as a rest point. The town also began exporting fish at this time, which contributed greatly to the local economy.
The town serves as the main hub on the island for tourists to enjoy food and drink while they explore its many locations around the island.

  • Talisker Distillery

The home of the famous Talisker whisky was built in 1831 however on the 12th of August 1948 a fire broke out in the store of the distillery. Thankfully no whisky was destroyed, however the stillhouse fire destroyed the rest of the distillery which wasn’t rebuilt again until 1960. Sitting on the beautiful loch of Harport, visitors from around the world come to enjoy the tasting of one of Scotland’s finest whiskies.

  • Lealt Falls

This is a sturdy wooden bridge and platform over the gorge with wonderful views of the falls and the Trotternish mountains to the west. Below the platform is Invertote Bay where the crumbling remains of the buildings used by salmon fishermen of old still scar the land. There are also the remnants of the old factory which processed diatomite from the nearby mines in the late 19th century. The diatomite was transported from the mines from Loch Cuithir via the Lealt Valley Diatomite Railway, a narrow-gauge tramway built in 1889 running parallel to the River Lealt. The rock was then processed in the factory, boarded on skiffs and sent to the mainland by puffer boat.

  • Kilt Rock

Kilt rock has always been famous for its appearance resembling that of Scottish kilt patterns. Before the coming of advanced route-finding equipment, the iconic cliffs, with their unmistakable appearance, were once used as a navigational aid for sailors. In the foreground is the spectacular Mealt Falls. Fed by the fresh waters of Loch Mealt near Ellishadder, the falls plunge onto rocky coastline and the Sound of Raasay over 60 metres below. Looking south towards the cliffs of Rubha nam Brathairean, where some of the Island’s most important mid-Jurassic fossils have been found.

  • Fairy Glen

Hidden in the hills of Uig, above the sweeping sides of Glen Conon, the enchanting geographical formations that form Balnaknock, the Fairy Glen (Bail nan cnoc in Gaelic, meaning village in the hills) has gained this special miniature landscape on Skye a reputation for being a place of myth and wonder. Described by some as a mini-Quiraing, this small and magical feature of the Island, dotted with gnarled rowan trees, was formed over 100,000 years ago by post-Glacier landslides, while years of erosion and the elements sculpted the Torridonian sandstone into unusual patterns of cone-shaped craggy hillocks, random boulders, tranquil lochans and even a basalt castle.

  • The Quiraing

The Quiraing is a landform on the eastern face of Meall na Suiramach, the northernmost summit of the Trotternish escarpment on the Isle of Skye. It takes the form of a craterous hollow surrounded by a high rampart of rock. Within the hollow is a raised plateau, known as the Table. Other distinctive features of the landscape are the Needle, a jagged pinnacle rising to 120 feet (37 m), and the Prison, a mass of rock resembling a medieval keep. Like the rest of the Trotternish escarpment, the Quiraing was formed when a thick layer of flood basalt spread over the peninsula and destabilized the weak sedimentary rocks below, causing a succession of landslides. It has been renowned for its fantastical appearance since the Victorian period.
